Collecting: Habit, Addiction, Passion

(Standing) "Hi, my name is Patricia and I'm an addict." With those words, that admission, out for all to take in, I will defend those who like myself simply cannot have enough fabric. The textures, the smells, and oh, the endless visuals.

I'm a novice compared to many who work with fabrics. Whether using fabric in a hobby or business there is an intimate relationship with it, one that some find difficult to understand. There is the attraction, then the plan and the complex handling that leads to the final product. Ideally this pleases the maker and perhaps others.

Like any collector, the peak of passion may be the thrill of the acquisition. I hunt for historical weaving, fabrics and fringes and am pleasantly surprised at the unexpected treasures I find during the search. In my case that has led to further collections.

Musing the other day about what might become of my various collections carefully folded or displayed, I found a quote by Jose Saramago that seems existential to me, but proper: "...when the day comes when it must be dispersed, and that day always comes, either with death or when the collector grows weary, everything goes back to its beginnings, everything returns to chaos."

For now and for many more years, my wall of fabric bins are far from chaos calmly waiting for my next pillow creation.
